Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

FAFSA opens on October 1st.  We will have financial aid counselors on campus throughout the months of October and November to help with this process.  Keep in mind that it is completely free to fill out the FAFSA - use the link below to go to the correct site - the application is completely free so be aware of scam sites that try to make you pay.

Below are questions that I often am asked about the FAFSA:

Who should complete the FAFSA?

  • Anyone who thinks they qualify for a grant (free money from the state/federal government – based on household income and other factors.)
  •  Anyone who wants/needs a loan from the federal/state government

What if I know I don’t qualify for a grant, and I do not want to take out a loan, do I still have to complete the FAFSA?

  • Murray State requires FAFSA completion for those students who wish to receive scholarship money from their institution
  • Other schools may require it as well so you need to check with your school.  Some schools require it for work study (jobs on campus – WKCTC requires it for this)
  • Some scholarships require you to report your EFC (expected family contribution – which you get when you complete the FAFSA) on their application

What income level qualifies for the “free money” (grants)?

There is no magic number for income because the formula is complicated and takes into account more than just your income. It includes the number in your household, how many are going to college, etc.

So if you have any doubt or you want help, make sure to take advantage of the Financial Aid Counselors we will have on our campus.  They are the experts!

Some colleges have priority deadlines for completing the FAFSA - please check with your school to see if they have a deadline.
