Kim Phelps Memorial Scholarship

The Kim Phelps Memorial Scholarship was founded and established in 2019. This scholarship will award one $500 scholarship to a graduate of Marshall County High School with dreams of working in the education sector. Kim spent her teaching career at Marshall County High School as a Spanish Teacher. Love was her anthem, and she sang it loud. She was kind - kind to everyone she met, no matter who they were or what journey they were on in life. From teaching kids in school to coaching kids in weightlifting to chasing her own dreams both with a barbell and not. She lived a life that was full of kindness and love. Kim always exhibited strength. Even with her cancer diagnosis in 2012, that didn't stop her from doing what she loved. She continued her passion for teaching while undergoing treatments and joined CrossFit in 2013 to build her strength. The recipient will be a graduating Marshall County High School Senior who has overcome their personal adversity and demonstrates: Strength Thoughtfulness and service to others living life, pursuing dreams, and enabling one’s self. The scholarship is to be used for post-secondary education at an accredited nonprofit or public educational institution in pursuit of an education/teaching career. The school may be a two- or four-year college or university.

Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation, transcript, and a one-page essay. Essays should include what strength means to you and how you have exhibited strength in your life.

ALL APPLICATION INFORMATION IS DUE APRIL 1ST, 2021.

AWARD WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON MAY 1ST, 2021.

PLEASE THE ESSAY, LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION,
AND TRANSCRIPT TO JILL.BOONE@MARSHALL.KYSCHOOLS.US

DEADLINE EXTENDED FOR UK STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER

DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO MARCH 31

In order to help provide quality medical care to our athletes, we are looking for qualified high school seniors who are interested in working as a student athletic training aide at the University of Kentucky.  Our goal each year is to bring in students who have an interest in a career in the medical field (i.e. athletic training, physical therapy, nursing, pre-med, etc.) and expose them to the profession of athletic training and sports medicine.  Scholarships are available after a student completes one year in the program.  Scholarships are awarded based on a student’s performance in the athletic training room and the classroom.

Senior students who hold a 2.75 or above cumulative GPA and may be interested in becoming a student athletic training aide at the University of Kentucky should fill out a copy of the APPLICATION and either email to me or mail to me by February 8, 2021 at: Joe Craft Football Training Center, 295 Alumni Drive Room 110, Lexington, Kentucky 40506-0280. We will select students to interview with our full time staff in the spring. They may also contact the Visitor’s Center at (859) 257-3595 for general information regarding the University of Kentucky.

Please contact me at (859) 257-7349 or by e-mail at evan.g@uky.edu if you have any further questions.

Evan Griskowitz, MS, ATC, LAT

Assistant Athletic Trainer

UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY:  What is an Athletic Trainer?

Athletic Training is practiced by Athletic Trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients.  Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. They work hands-on with the athletes daily for injury treatment and rehabilitation.

Athletic training is NOT the same profession as personal training Certified athletic trainers work with more than just athletes – they can be found just about anywhere that people are physically active.

Please visit NATA.org for more information on Athletic Training!

Students who want to become an Athletic Trainer as a career must take one of two pathways:

1.    Attend a university with an undergraduate/graduate accredited program that includes formal instruction in upper and lower extremity evaluation/rehab, injury prevention, emergency action plans, etc. The student can then sit for the national board exam (BOC) after receiving master’s degree.

2.    After obtaining an undergraduate degree in a health science related field, apply to an entry level master’s program. The student will also be formally educated in Athletic Training classes and be able to sit for the national board exam (BOC) after graduation.

OUR STUDENTS

Our students major in a variety of fields: human health science, kinesiology, pre-physical therapy, nursing, and even business. They are given priority registration when registering for classes. This means they schedule with the other student athletes days before the rest of campus. This allows them to register for the classes they need and work their schedule around the practice times for their assigned sport. Last semester our students had phenomenal grades:

-          100% achieved a 3.0 or higher semester GPA

-          73% (19) attained at least a 3.50 GPA for the semester

-          23% (6 students) attained a 4.0 GPA for the semester

2021-2022 Commissioner's Student Advisory Council

Students encouraged to apply for 2021-2022 Commissioner’s Student Advisory Council

(FRANKFORT, KY) – Public school students in grades 10-12 are invited to apply for 14 vacant positions on the 2021-2022 Commissioner’s Student Advisory Council, a group that provides input to the Kentucky commissioner of education.

The Commissioner’s Student Advisory Council is a year-long program. The group will meet with the commissioner and Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) staff to discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting students throughout Kentucky. Members will provide feedback from a student perspective on critical issues impacting Kentucky students and schools.

"Involving the voices of our students and empowering them in our decisions is critically important to all of us here at KDE," said Jason E. Glass, Kentucky's commissioner of education and chief learner. "Over the past year, KDE has increased the number of meetings with this valuable student council and has continued to look for additional ways to include their voice as we develop policy and provide guidance to our districts and schools."

KDE is seeking students for the council who have innovative ideas and thoughtful insight into how schools and student achievement can be improved. Students who represent the diverse academic, geographic, demographic and school-size variables for Kentucky are encouraged to apply.

Students selected to serve on the council represent each of the seven Supreme Court districts, and at least one student from the Kentucky School for the Blind, the Kentucky School for the Deaf and students enrolled in a career and technical education pathway. Students selected for the council may serve consecutive one-year terms as long as they remain eligible to serve.

A committee of KDE appointed representatives will review and score all applications based on the answers provided. Top scoring applicants will be invited to interview for a position on the council; appointments will be determined by how well the applicants communicate their ideas and goals.

The application deadline is March 12, 2021. Interested students should use this Google form to apply.
